Tools need boundaries, not just a menu.
Dify’s January 2024 Agent announcement connected model selection, tool use, knowledge, and a visual assistant-building interface.
The documented moment
Dify published this Agent release on 24 January 2024. Its announcement described Agent Assistants using different models, a visual interface, shared variables, built-in tools, custom tools via APIs, and a renamed Studio area. The post lists examples such as search, finance, scraping, image generation, and time tools. This case records the vendor’s dated description and its page image; it does not verify present-day tool availability, model behavior, or the safety of a particular integration. The direct asset was reopened from the first-party release page on 19 September 2026; the page does not give a distinct capture date.
What a builder can borrow
A tool picker is not a permission model. For each capability, write down which users may invoke it, what data may leave the system, which parameters are constrained, whether an action can write or spend, and how a person can inspect the result. Give the dialogue layer a small, typed action vocabulary rather than broad access to everything an integration can do. Read-only lookups, reversible drafts, and irreversible transactions should be visually and operationally different. The agent may suggest an action; a separate control should decide whether the current user and record satisfy the required conditions.
A useful prototype test
Create a harmless read-only lookup and a consequential write using the same underlying connector. Try both from a user without write permission, with a malformed parameter, and after a conversation correction. The interface should make the denied action and its reason visible without exposing sensitive data. Also verify that cancellation stops queued work where that is expected. These are proposed acceptance tests, not a review of Dify. Recheck tool terms, data handling, and current permissions before production.
